Indian Runners are an unusual looking domestic duck they are very slender and stand upright almost like a bowling ball with legs. Runners are the most active foragers of all ducks. They range over a large area eating mosquito larvae, snails, slugs, weeds, and other edibles. They don’t require a pond for good health, in fact a small paddling pool would do the job as they prefer a water source more to drink and wash in.
These ducks are quick-growing and prolific layers, each hen can lay 250-350 whitish to greenish eggs per year averaging 2.8 oz., which the USDA would grade it as “Jumbo”; they have a rich flavor and texture. The Indian Runner is listed in a “watch” status by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
Here at Quartz Ridge Ranch we have 2 drakes and 4 ducks. We plan on having ducklings available Spring of 2012.
