The American Guinea Hog is the ideal sustainable heritage farm pig, known for its moderate size, excellent foraging abilities, friendly temperament, excellently flavored meat and indispensable lard. While the American Guinea Hog is smaller than industrial hog breeds, it is a good-sized farm pig providing a nice, well-marbled carcass. These Hogs are unique to the United States and today, there are fewer than 1,000 registered with the AGHA and are on the “Critical” List according to the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory. You can read more about them here.
If you have been looking for a small farm pig to breed for a steady supply of meat or to help you till your garden and pastures without wreaking the havoc that large hogs can—this is the pig for you. Easy to feed, easy to care for, and friendly (thus easy to move around simply by calling). Their smaller size makes them a dream to handle. Here at Quartz Ridge Ranch we have a breeding pair of hogs, King George and Pippa. We look forward to our first litter in the Spring of 2012.
